When I think of summer, I think of this watermelon salad. It’s simple to make and there’s no cooking required, making it great when you don’t want to turn on the stove to make something for dinner. If you’ve never made watermelon salad before, then you’re in for a treat! The sweetness of the watermelon and the saltiness of the feta cheese just go so well together!

One of my favorite times to make this watermelon salad is for a weekend BBQ. The watermelon salad just goes so well with my Grilled BBQ Chicken Breast and Grilled Greek Chicken Skewers. Trust me, everyone will be so excited about this salad!

What You’ll Need

  • Watermelon: check out my post on how to cut watermelon if you need some tips on cutting them into cubes.
  • Cucumbers: if you want to skip peeling cucumbers and removing the seeds, try using English cucumbers.
  • Blueberries: be sure to rinse the blueberries first.
  • Feta cheese: I use mini cubed feta but you can also use mozzarella cheese.
  • Dressing: dress the watermelon salad with olive oil, balsamic glaze, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and basil leaves.

Tips and Notes

  • Add a little crunch to the watermelon salad with a handful of toasted walnuts, pinenuts, or cashews.
  • You can add additional fruit to this such as strawberries or cherries.
  • Don’t like basil? Try adding mint to the salad!
  • If you don’t have lemon, you can swap for lime.
  • Avocado makes for a great addition to this watermelon feta salad.
  • I recommend juicing your lemon instead of using bottled lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice does not have the same bright taste to it.
  • Got a melon baller? You can make this salad look a bit fancier if you’d like to. You can even hollow out the watermelon with the baller then serve the salad inside of the empty watermelon!

FAQs

How do I pick a watermelon?

The heavier the better! After picking up a couple of watermelons, you’ll get a feel of which watermelon is heavy for its size. You want a heavier one. You can check out my post here on how to cut watermelon to learn more about picking the best watermelon.

Can I make this ahead of time?

I recommend making portions of this watermelon salad ahead of time. You can cut the watermelon and cucumber ahead of time and store them in separate containers. You can wash the blueberries ahead of time as well. Then when ready to enjoy, you can combine them. The watermelon and cucumbers may have released liquid as they sat in the fridge but you can just drain them before using. This is why I prefer to keep them separate!

Can I make this spicy?

You definitely can! Try slicing a jalapeño or serrano pepper for some added heat to the watermelon salad.

How do I store leftovers?

You can store leftover watermelon salad in the fridge for a couple of days but it will start getting soggy as the watermelon and cucumber releases water.
