Sponge cake with chocolate sauce

A throwback to the good old days when I attended school and ate the school cafeteria menu in Hungary. A simple, barely sweet dessert to follow a hearty soup.

5 eggs

150g sugar

300g flour

1 tsp baking powder

100mL water

50mL vegetable oil

3 tbsp starch

3 tbsp sugar

0.25 cup cocoa powder

2 cups milk

Preheat oven to 350F. Butter and flour a 9 by 11 inch nonstick pan.

Beat the eggs with the sugar and oil. Mix in the flour sifted with the baking powder, and the water, alternating. Pour into baking shape and bake until center is set.

Meanwhile, mix the sugar, cocoa powder, and starch. Pour in a little bit of the milk and stir until smooth. Add the rest of the milk little by little. Bring to a boil. Pour sauce onto cake slices.
