Can I use canned peaches instead of fresh?
Definitely. Using canned peaches is actually preferable in this recipe, because you’ll need the syrup from the can as well! Of course, if you prefer using fresh peaches, that’s ok too. You’ll just need to cook them in sugar to first to make a syrup to be used in the cobbler as well.
Why is my peach cobbler so runny?
The most likely cause of a runny cobbler is using peaches that have not been cooked already. Fresh or frozen peaches will release water into the cobbler during baking, causing a runny texture. This is easily remedied by using canned peaches or by cooking the peaches on the stovetop before incorporating them into the cobbler.
Another cause of runny cobbler may simply be that the cobbler was not allowed some time to cool before serving. As the dish cools after baking, the juices will thicken.
Can you make peach cobbler the night before?
I don’t recommend making this cobbler the night before. But this recipe requires so little preparation that you can prepare it quickly and easily about an hour before you’re ready to serve it.
Can I substitute other fruit for the peaches?
If you wish to substitute another kind of fruit, be sure to cook the fruit on the stovetop first. Mix together 4 cups of fruit and 1 cup of sugar over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. This will create a syrup that you can use in the recipe.

- 1 stick butter
- ½ cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 28 ounces sliced peaches in heavy syrup, not drained
- 1 cup milk
- ground cinnamon, optional
- Preheat oven to 350 °F.
- Put the butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt.
- Whisk together the sugar, flour, and milk. Pour the batter over the melted butter. Do not stir.
- Spoon peach slices on top, and slowly pour the syrup in as well. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon if desired.
- Bake for 30 to 45 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve while warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
